The Castle of Good Hope

South Africa’s oldest building

Adding great value to Cape Town’s rich cultural heritage, and built over 3 centuries ago in 1666, The Castle of Good Hope is a star fort that stands today as South Africa’s oldest building. A unique example of 17th century Dutch classicism, the Castle was built by the Vereenigde Ost-Indische Compagnie, or Dutch East India Company. The Castle withheld the purpose of acting as a replenishment station for ships passing the uncertain waters of the Cape on long voyages between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies. At the Castle you can also visit the Castle’s Military Museum, as well as the William Fehr collection, where history transforms into art.
